John G Mestan

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John George Mestan, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, on March 17th at 7:57 am in Altamonte Springs, FL. He was 94 years old. Born of humble beginnings on November 12, 1929, in Timmins, Ontario, Canada, to Andrew and Maria Mestan, John's early years were filled with happiness. He enjoyed time with family and playing hockey whenever he could. John eventually met Cecile Theriault, the love of his life, and they married on June 6, 1951. After having three children, John relocated his family from Canada to Florida in 1971 following a promotion with Kmart Stores. He spent 45 years in upper management at Kmart, where he was known for his dedication, extreme work ethic, and commitment to customer satisfaction. In 1993, he played a pivotal role in the launch of Kmart in Europe and became the head of European Operations, which led him back to his family’s roots in Prague, where his parents and older brother Andrew were born. John retired in 2001 in Florida. In retirement, John spent his days enjoying his love of tennis both on and off the court. He played tennis multiple times per week until recent years. His home on Spring Lake brought him much joy as well, where he spent many afternoons in the pool with his grandchildren. John was a member of the St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church community and Rotary Club International. He also enjoyed his seasonal work with H&R Block and volunteering with Seminole County on Election days. John was an avid conversationalist and storyteller. He cherished spending time with his family, friends, and anyone willing to listen to his humorous and sometimes quite long tales. Survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Cecile Mestan, John G. Mestan leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. He is also survived by his sister, Bessie Shultz, residing in Canada. Additionally, he is survived by his children: Richard Mestan, John Mestan (Kathy), and Michelle Schloot (Kevin). John's memory will be cherished by his grandchildren: Suzanne (Jamison), Trin (Natalia), Christina, John, and Jennilee. Additionally, his great-grandchildren, Charlie and Wendy, will carry his spirit forward. John's presence in their lives will be deeply missed, but his love and legacy will endure through his family for generations to come. The funeral has been scheduled for April 19, 2024 at St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church at 11am. Reception to follow at the Mestan residence.
