John W. Carl

John W. Carl, Jr. died peacefully on July 26th, 2022 in Oviedo, FL at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Jane, and is survived by his sons Robert, Thomas and Michael, daughter Carrie Johnston, sister Mary Baines, brother-in-law Jack Baines, daughters-in-law Connie Ngai Foo and April Carl, grandchildren Shayna Gable, Mike Rines, Laura Carl, Sarah Carl and Sophie Carl, and great grandchildren Mason, Alyssa and Elijah. John was born on March 26, 1935 to Laura Belle Payne Carl and John W. Carl, Sr. in Hackensack, NJ. The family eventually settled in San Gabriel, CA, where John graduated from Alhambra High School. He learned piano and would entertain family and friends with his playing and singing throughout his life. John earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at the California State University at Los Angeles, and he completed a 6-year enlistment in the U.S. Army Reserves. After college, John moved to Honolulu, HI where he joined the Naval Investigative Service (NCIS), and met his future wife, Mary Jane Keim. John spent 27 years with NCIS, including postings in Yuma, AZ, Naples, Italy, Earle, NJ, Whidbey Island, WA, and Seattle, WA. Following retirement from NCIS, he began a second career with the Bellevue, WA Police Department, as manager of its property evidence room. John enjoyed boating and was a member of the Queen City Yacht Club in Seattle. He later traded boating for RV’ing, traveling throughout the western U.S. John spent his final years in Sun City West, AZ and Oviedo, FL. A faithful Christian, John was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Bothell, WA where he had many friends. He eventually returned to his Episcopalian roots and attended Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, WA, All Saints of The Desert in Sun City, AZ and Church of the Incarnation in Oviedo, FL. The family wishes to thank Vitas Healthcare and the nurses and staff at Madison at Oviedo for the excellent care and compassion John received at the end of his life.
