Helen L. Blackton

Helen Blackton was born on the first day of Spring 96 years ago in a small town in N.C.. She was the only child of Anne and Marvin, childhood sweethearts. She lived a long full happy life and died peacefully in her home on Feb 8th, as she wanted. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Charles Blackton, Sr. and her first born, Charles Blackton Jr. She was very proud to be a fraction Cherokee. She grew up in a small community across the river from NYC during the Great Depression. She had many stories of interesting neighbors who were out of work Vaudeville talent. As her contribution to the war effort, she worked as a Pink Lady and soon after graduation found work with the War Department assisting the people doing the important work of Code Breaking at Fort Monmouth. After eloping, Helen moved to Orlando in the early 50s with her husband and first born. They opened a lingerie store on Orange Ave. and had three more children. Later she worked with her husband in the family roofing business where she became indispensable. She raised four children, Chuck [Barbara], Micky [Debbie], Stephanie "Taffy" [Elizabeth] and Bruce [Judy], was a grandmother to five, [Samantha, Chuck, Mike, Aubrie, Cassidy], and great grandmother to three [Ashton, Haley, Barrett]. She loved to cook, laugh, entertain, play bridge, eat ice cream, dance, and travel. She was a voracious reader and especially loved all kinds of history. She valued education, was active with the PTA, and supported her children's and grandchildren's varied interests. She was involved with fundraising to build St James Catholic Church, then later St. Charles Catholic Church. In 1962 she was one of a group of ten very committed women who formed a fundraising group to help Morning Star Catholic School in its efforts to educate children with special needs. Helen served as the first and second President of the Morning Star Auxiliary and continued to support the Morning Star Fashion show every year. As a member of The Women's Committee of the Florida Symphony , she helped with fundraising efforts to 'Save The Symphony" contributing to the Florida Heritage CookBook, and was a member of the Orlando Garden Club. She was a remarkable, generous woman, who touched many lives and who is already deeply missed. The family would especially like to thank LaToya Pugh and Latitia Bryant who provided the exceptional support and loving care that extended her life by years and enabled her to pass peacefully at home.
