Mr. Ervin S. Waller

Mr. Ervin S. Waller, age 92, of Winter Park, Florida, formally of Lynn, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the Hospice of The Comforter in Altamonte Springs, FL. Ervin was born on June 17, 1921 in Chelsea, Massachusetts to Fred Ray Waller and Mabel Carrie (Hutchinson) Waller. Growing up in Hyde Park, Ma, he spent his summers with his grandparents Charles and Pheobe Nickerson and his aunts Susie (Hutchinson) Smith and Addie (Hutchinson)Sherlaw and uncle Dana Smith on their farms in East Lyndon,Vermont. He enjoyed helping his grandfather and uncle with milking & herding dairy cattle, fishing the flowing brooks and exploring the nature around him. Vermont was his favorite place and he cherished his childhood memories there with his cousin Esther (Smith) Wadlin and his two sisters, Pauline (Waller) McGonagle and Lucille (Waller) Hackett. A graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Ma, Ervin worked as a tool and die maker at the Watertown Arsenal, in Watertown, Ma. From 1942-1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on a naval aircraft carrier during World War II. As a young enlisted man, Ervin enjoyed dressing in uniform and attending dances with his friends. At a Boston YWCA dance, he met a pretty 24-year-old named Pauline (Polly), and they were later married on May 29th 1949. Two years later they welcomed their daughter, Alice. Ervin's love of New England's landscapes led him to take his wife, Pauline Marion (Moser) Waller and his daughter, Alice Elaine (Waller) Roderick on many camping excursions throughout the White Mountains, the coasts of Maine and to visit natural wonders and monumental sites throughout the country. He was very talented when it came to photography and drawing, and enjoyed sharing slides taken from his many trips and pencil-drawing nature scenes. As a health-minded man, Ervin stayed very active by exercising including walking and jogging each day and commuting by bicycle until the age of 82. An avid fisherman, he spent much time fishing off of Bass Point in Nahant, Ma as well as many lakes and streams throughout New England. He enjoyed gardening and his favorite plants included phlox, african violets and geraniums. Along with his wife, Pauline, and daughter, Alice, he is survived by son-in-law, Paul S. Roderick. Grand-children Terrence, Tracy, Steven and Jessica. Great-grandchildren Nicole, Michael, Anya, Kayla, Connor, Megan and Courtney. Cousins Shirley Davis and Bruce Wadlin. Also, grand-daughter-in-law Laurel, five nieces and one nephew. He is preceded in death by son-in-law John McCarthy, sisters Pauline (Waller) McGonagle and Lucille (Waller) Hackett and cousin Esther (Smith) Wadlin.
