Edward G. Carter

Ed Carter moved on to his heavenly home on September 3, 2020. He was 88. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna, whom he fondly referred to as “Doll.” Ed passed peacefully and his legacy is carried forward by his sons Greg, Mike, Patrick, Tom, and Scott; his daughter René; and seven grandchildren. Ed grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where he attended De La Salle High School, and met his future wife, Donna, at the Big Bear Grocery Store, where they were both employed. He was drafted into the Army in July 1952, during the Korean War, with deployment to West Germany, serving as the radio operator for the Commander of HQ 12th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group. He later joined the Chrysler Missile Division, where he worked on components for the Redstone Missile program. He was transferred to Florida in 1960 to continue this work, later performing electrical component installation and troubleshooting in Space Shuttle cockpits, from the beginnings of the Space Shuttle program through his retirement in 1998. Ed was a man of faith and a devout Catholic. He was an active member of the Holy Name Society, ushered mass each Sunday, and volunteered at church Bingo games on Saturday nights. Ed was the king of DIY and could fix anything – appliances, cars, bikes – you name it. He loved tinkering with things and owned every tool you could find in Home Depot. He helped out friends, friends of his kids, as well as neighbors with car repairs and house projects. He also loved house painting and took great pride in maintaining a beautifully manicured lawn. He loved football and basketball, and always cheered for his favorite teams: the Detroit Lions, the Michigan Wolverines, the UCF Knights, and the Duke Blue Devils. In retirement, Ed remained very active in the church. For over 20 years, he volunteered with AARP each tax season to prepare taxes at no charge for those in the community who needed help. He also assisted many friends and neighbors who needed help with tax preparation. Ed was always there for his children, helping with homework; attending concerts, ball games, and scout activities; and teaching each of them to drive, as well as all the other life skills they needed to be a success in the world. Saying goodbye is bittersweet, because Ed is now at peace and resting in the arms of his Savior, but he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
