Doris Peavey

Doris J. Peavey 5-1-1932 - 8-30-2022 Doris Joann Peavey was born in Lansing, Michigan on May 1, 1932 to Charles Albert and Ruth Caroline Smith, the youngest of 4 daughters. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Thomas Hulbert, her parents, Charles and Ruth, Her sisters Theodosia Ott and Charlene Grant. She is survived by her husband, Donald Earl Peavey, sister Beverly Mattoon, daughters, Vickie Hulbert, Sandra (Walter) Gregory, Sharon Fisher, Pamela (Stan) Zemke, sons Rick Peavey, Brian (Heidi) Hulbert, Grandchildren, Stacy (Rob) Holmes, Shannon Gregory, Carida (Jeremy) Stevens, Tom (Jerica) Fisher, Mathew (Morgan) Hulbert, Andrew Hulbert, Rachel (Christopher) Underwood, Nick Zemke, Andea (Josh) Geiger. Greatgrands Anestasia, Cipriano, Paryse Holmes, Julie, Jacob, Jonathon, Jillian, Jadyn, Annalise, Eli, Jeremiah, Brycen, Kendra, Brendan, Andrew, Jacob, Elizabeth, Annabell, Landon and Briana. Too many nieces and nephews to count. There are many in Haiti who have grown up without bearing Mom and Dad’s name, but who bear their hearts, raised as their own flesh and blood. Although Doris’s mother only had a 6th grade education, she was an extremely talented lady. Doris was the youngest in the string ensemble with her sisters, playing the cello or bass violin and the sisters blended their voices in perfect harmony. Along with teaching voice, their mother taught each of them the piano. Doris grew up in a large old house bustling with the sound of children they fostered, over 200 in all. Ruth always led Bible studies which grew into two of the largest Baptist churches in Lansing. Doris gave her heart to Jesus at a very young age and eagerly memorized many scriptures. When Doris was a young teenager, there came a special missionary to her church to speak about mission work. She went forward to accept a calling on her life to be a missionary. For her entire life she told everyone she was going to be a missionary. She tried to pursue different avenues to ready herself for that mission work but God kept closing doors. She was a mother, pastor’s wife, worked home health care, taught in church and several other jobs. Always she would tell people that God had called her to work as a missionary. When age 40 rolled around, God opened the doors to Haiti. She often chided that Moses was 40 years old when he was called out too. While married to the love of her youth for 16 years, they survived financial and physical hardship but remained happy until God took him home after 8 years of physical disability and pain. Within the next year God sent Don Peavey to Doris, her three daughters and infant son’s lives. They traveled and sang at many churches and functions across the US. They produced 3 LP albums and lives were touched by their anointed music. “Mom,” as most of Haiti knew her, worked very hard at everything she did, and always, without exception, loved her Lord first and foremost. The doors opened to Haiti and despite the physical and spiritual oppression, God was ever present and the love of her life. Confronted with babies dying of tetanus shortly after birth, whooping cough, typhoid, Dengue fever, TB, burns and a host of other third world diseases like malnutrition and kwashiorkor she met the challenge head on. She began birthing babies and treating sicknesses as she learned to diagnose and treat them. They started out renting a small room across the street from their 4 room rental house in town with a twin outhouse while Don worked at building their house down on their land. He built her dreams. They both had a passion for the lost and gave all they could to be Jesus with skin on. Before the orphanage was completed, a young mother was brought in with advanced malnutrition. Just before she died, she asked that EGO take in her child. Rode Dalphinus became the first orphan. As word spread, more orphaned children, some critically ill, began to come. Don and Doris advanced as the Lord led them, building a clinic, orphanage buildings, kitchen, dining area, fish ponds, chicken houses, barns, gardens, guest houses, tabernacle and large school for over 500 students. Doris was frequently heard to call out the name of her Lord Jesus in prayer or praise, she had an intimate relationship with her Lord. They raised the children by example, training them in work, play and spiritually. They gave incentives to learn scriptures, put on Biblical plays for the community, taught money management and vending on special occasions. We could go on forever telling of Doris’s love for her Lord and those around her but she is finally home hearing her Jesus say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: Enter thou into the joy of the Lord. Matt 25:21 A small Graveside service will be held Sept 9, 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will be held for Doris 3:00 September 10th at Christ Church 1111 Indiana Ave Palm Harbor, Florida 34683
