Awilda Figueroa Izquierdo

With heavy heart, we announce the passing of our beloved Awilda Figueroa, who left us on March 12th, 2025, at the age of 64. Awilda was born on August 11th, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York, to Angel Luis Figueroa and the late Maria Izquierdo. In 1973, she and her family moved to Bayamón, Puerto Rico, where she grew up and later made a life for herself. In 2023, Awilda moved to Orlando, Florida, where she spent her final year surrounded by the love of her family. Awilda was a devoted wife to her husband, Carlos E. Westerband, and a profoundly loving and dedicated mother to her children, Melvin Junior Babilonia and Ashly Westerband. She also embraced her role as a stepmother to Karla Westerband and loved her as her own. Her relationship with her son, Melvin, was one of deep, unwavering love and unconditional support. Awilda was always there for him, no matter what the circumstances. She gave him strength, guidance, and encouragement throughout his life, showing him the true meaning of a mother’s love. Their bond was unbreakable; she did everything possible to ensure his happiness and well-being. Melvin was truly blessed to have such a caring and selfless mother by his side. Awilda and her daughter, Ashly, shared a unique and cherished bond. They spoke every day, both morning and night, consistently checking in on each other, sharing their thoughts, and offering each other love and support. This daily connection reflected their deep love for one another and the importance of their relationship in each other’s lives. Her heart grew even more with the arrival of her two granddaughters, Angelique Vazquez and Kamila Vazquez. As a grandmother, she delighted in watching them grow, sharing in their joys, and loving them with the same tenderness and devotion she had shown her children. Her greatest joy in life was being a "Mima" to her only grandson, Ian Roberto Rosado Westerband, who was the light of her life. She found so much joy in watching him grow and loved every moment spent with him, often spoiling him with affection and attention. She treasured her role as Mima dearly, and the special bond they shared will never be forgotten. She was a steadfast and loving sister to Yolanda, Wanda, and Brenda Figueroa, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond. Their lifelong relationship was built on love, trust, and a deep connection, and they were always there for each other through every chapter of life. Awilda was also a cherished titi (aunt) to five nieces, one nephew, four great-nephews, and nine great-nieces. Her extended family will forever hold her memory close, and she was a shining example of love and care to all of them. A woman of outstanding dedication and work ethic, Awilda worked for over 20 years as a contract manager for Imperial Dade in Cataño, Puerto Rico, before retiring in 2023. Her career was a testament to her commitment, and she was highly respected by colleagues and friends alike. Awilda’s spirit was one of joy and warmth. She was known for her infectious laughter, zest for life, and ability to make everyone around her feel welcome. Whether playing a game of Rummikub, enjoying a round of bowling, or losing herself in a game of Pacman, she approached everything with enthusiasm and a playful spirit. Her love for horror movies, the TV show Friends, and indulging in her favorite foods—Italian dishes, seafood, steak, and lobster—brought her great happiness. Awilda’s personality was as vibrant as her favorite activities. She was a social butterfly, an extrovert who thrived in the company of others. She had a spunky and fiery side, often described as lovingly stubborn and a true reflection of her mother's strong spirit. Her humor and positivity made her a beloved presence, and she had a way of brightening any room she entered. Always the life of the party, Awilda was known for her warmth, her humor, and her ability to make even the most ordinary moments feel extraordinary. Her family was everything to her. She was a dedicated daughter, a loving sister, a wonderful wife, a caring and devoted mother, and a cherished Mima to her grandson, Ian. We do not doubt that while she is now physically at peace, her dedication and watch over them will not fail.
